The 2012-2013 season has been announced and it’s MONUMENTAL! Not only because of our long awaited return to the Paramount Theatre, but because of the significant imprint we continue to make on our cultural landscape. While it all seems to be coming together this fall, it may be years before the community realizes just how much of an impact this season’s new activities have on Orchestra Iowa, the performing arts industry, and a nearly-statewide community.
With the November opening of the Paramount Theatre comes a new operating structure. Orchestra Iowa and VenuWorks (the former facility manager) will team-up to co-operate the Theatre which will result in more events booked at the Paramount and better amenities for Theatre patrons.
We launch an ongoing partnership with Ballet Quad Cities which will bring professional dance to Cedar Rapids. The Paramount is proud to be the exclusive presenter of a
Nutcracker with both a professional dance company
and a professional orchestra in the state. In addition to bringing ballet to Cedar Rapids, the partnership will introduce Orchestra Iowa to the Quad Cities as we travel with them for their performances at the Adler Theatre.
Our chamber series continues to expand with four concerts each performed two nights at the new Opus Concert Café followed by a Sunday matinee performance at the new Coralville Center for the Performing Arts.
Finally, the season culminates with the world premiere of Cedar Rapids native and multi Grammy Award-winner Michael Daugherty’s
American Gothic. Commissioned by Orchestra Iowa, this work is inspired by such iconic Iowans as Grant Wood and Carl Van Vechten.
We are not the same Orchestra we were four years ago, nor are we the same Orchestra we will be four years from now. As a Mad Men fan, I was struck by a line from the Season Five premier where Pete Campbell defined
stable as being that step backwards between succeeding and failing. We have accomplished much during the past few years, but I can promise you, there’s much more to come.
