Instrumental Ensembles
Group Classes
Group classes are offered in violin, viola, and harp to reinforce technical skills, music theory, leadership skills and artistry development in a fun and nurturing environment. Each class is 45 minutes in length and assigned in consultation with the student's private teacher and parents.

Bass Ensemble
The Bass Ensemble is designed to teach the fundamentals of chamber music performance, sharpen listening skills and broaden knowledge of reading in the bass, tenor and treble clefs. A variety of literature styles will be explored, including classical, jazz and rock. Advanced students will focus on expanding upper register dexterity and expressive performing within a small group. Beginning and intermediate level students concentrate on expanding fingerboard/note placement knowledge, tenor and treble clef reading and thumb position. Intonation, rhythmic accuracy and bowing technique will also be addressed. More than one session may be held during the year.

Harp Ensemble
The Harp Ensemble will perform advanced repertoire of various styles while focusing on technical skills, listening, and ensemble playing. Rehearsals will focus on following a conductor, rhythmic accuracy, listening, dynamics, and the interaction of musicians in an ensemble. The ensemble will perform a minimum of once per semester. An informal audition is required before a student may enroll.

HEIRS
2010-2011 marks the premier season for the Symphony School's Honors Ensemble in Residence. Two violinists, one violist, and one cellist will be selected to work with members of the Orchestra Iowa String Quartet for a year-long chamber music residency. In addition to regular coachings, these four musicians will represent the Symphony School in numerous performance opportunities throughout the season.
Each musician selected into this highly competitive program will receive a full scholarship for the program. Those students interested in being considered for the HEIRS program should contact the Symphony School at 319.363.3960 for information.
