Copland Quiet City
Falla Nights in the Gardens of Spain
Brahms Symphony No. 2
Also playing Sunday, October 18 at 2 pm in Iowa City at West High School.
Brahms’ symphonic masterpiece anchors this program that includes Falla’s impressionistic piano nocturnes and Copland’s solo piece for trumpet , English horn and strings. Although the Irwin Shaw play that Copland wrote the incidental music for itself saw only two performances, the rich drama of the work successfully captures its protagonist haunted through life for abandoning his roots. The same lush, elaborate, and brilliant settings are heard in both the Falla and Brahms.
