Beethoven       Symphony No. 1

Sunday, November 15 at 2 pm in Iowa City at the Englert Theatre.

While known as a Romantic composer, Beethoven was fully ensconced in the Classical period at the turn of the 19th-Century. His first symphony has many of the characteristics of one that would have been composed by his teacher—Franz Joseph Haydn. Classicism became resurgent in the 20th Century with such works as Stravinsky’s ballet La Pulcinella, a work that marks the beginning of the composer’s neoclassical period. Respighi’s The Birds, although dating from 1927, is also based on 18th-Century material and is the composer’s attempt to transcribe birdsong into musical notation.
