SHOSTAKOVICH Piano Concerto No. 1
TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 6
Also playing Sunday, January 23 at 2:30 p.m. in Iowa City at West High School.
The New Year brings a cure for your winter blues as Orchestra Iowa, under the baton of Resident Conductor Daniel Kleinknecht, and guest artist Alan Huckleberry present a fiery January program.
Mussorgsky’s dreadfully haunting Night on Bald Mountain, made famous in the Walt Disney film, Fantasia, depicts a scene in which witches gather to hold their Sabbath. Shostakovich’s first piano concerto is sardonic and witty and has an unusual instrumentation of solo piano, string orchestra, and trumpet. Completing the program is Tchaikovsky’s passionate and emotional last symphony.
